Materials: Heparin sulphate and sodium pentobarbitone were obtained from Polfa, Krakow, Poland; Escherichia coli endotoxin (LPS serotype 0127:B8) and bovine albumin fraction V were obtained from Sigma, St Louis, Missouri, USA; and BAY X1005 was kindly provided by Dr Reiner Muller-Peddinghaus (Bayer AG, Wuppertal, Germany).

Statistical analysis: Results are shown as the mean ± SD of n values. The statistical difference from control values was determined by one-way ANOVA, and P<0.05 was taken as significant.

RESULTS
When rabbit lung was perfused with Krebs solution containing of 0.02% bovine albumin at 23 mL/min, baseline PAP was 9.8±3 mmHg (n=25). Switching from Krebs solution to homologous blood caused an increase in PAP from baseline to 35±7 mmHg (n=25) (Figure 1).
